Leading with Empathy During Difficult Times

Leading with Empathy During Difficult Times

Sometimes words just aren’t enough—especially when recent events leave us with more questions than answers.

The collective shock and grief revisited this month, along with memories from years past, remind us just how challenging it can be to know what to say or do. But as business owners and leaders, our responsibility is clear: remind our people that they truly matter.

I’m often asked,

“How do I support my team when the weight of the business feels so heavy?”

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Lean on your team’s talents. Empower them to contribute their best work by being fully present and showing genuine care.

Consider taking one small but meaningful step this week:

📅 Schedule a 30-minute one-on-one with each team member.

Ask them about their:

  • Highs

  • Lows

  • Messy middles

What’s exciting them?

What’s weighing them down?

Where are they feeling stuck?

And then—just listen. Not to respond, not to fix. Simply listen with empathy and without distraction.

Put down the phone. Step away from the desk. Make time to walk alongside your team, not apart from them.

Because when we choose connection over distance, we build trust, strengthen resilience, and create a culture where people know they are seen, heard, and valued.
